Signal boost

People in need--unfortunately, those seem to be on the increase. [info]green_knight wants work, as she's getting freelance biz off the ground. Here's the post. I personally recommend her translation skills from English into German. She also scanned three of my novels and converted them to text files for me to work with.

I would totally watch an Avengers sequel consisting of 100% Iron Man and Bruce Banner sciencewank.

Ahhhh, good ride.

I bicycled from home to Bryant-Lake Bowl this morning, taking the Midtown Greenway. Greenway = AWESOME. Half an hour to Uptown through wildflowers, gardens, between old restored warehouse and manufacturing buildings, birds singing, kids playing soccer at Kix Field, and no automobile traffic. My legs were a mite wobbly when I got back, and I was sweaty as a sweaty thing, but I was also full of exercise and self-determination endorphins.

And what I went to Bryant-Lake Bowl for was the monthly Fiber Brunch, which I've been meaning to get to for, well, months. Doreen runs a terrific get-together. And we had extra big fun, because the cast of the Princess Bride Drinking Game show asked if they could use the theater stage to rehearse. Of course we warned them that we could all recite entire scenes, but would try to contain ourselves. They were terrific, and lots of fun to knit to. ("Inconceivable! *drink!*)

Now I'm having a beer. Because that's what you do after a bike ride.

londonkds' review of Orbiter
[info]james_nicoll
I just read Warren Ellis's and Colleen Doran's graphic novella Orbiter, and was unimpressed to say the least.

Idle thought

How hard do you think it would be to convince the Conservapedia people that the practice of launch aborts in the space industry is a crypto-liberal plot to make people more comfortable with freedom of choice? Bear in mind that they think Einstein's models have to do with moral relativism.

Rocket Interruptus!
[info]james_nicoll
A new private supply ship for the International Space Station remained stuck on the ground Saturday after rocket engine trouble led to a last-second abort of the historic flight.

Urgently Needed: Clients
[info]green_knight
I'm trying bridge a cashflow problem that is posing an unsurmountable obstacle for me on my own. I am currently freelancing full time, but due to the vagaries of publishing, there is a two month gap between non-negotiable bills and payments being due. So I am looking to acquire clients, great and small, as soon as possible.

If you're able to give money outright - a pound, a fiver, more - please consider it. It *is* my birthday next week. (The best case scenario is that I will be working on my birthday, because I definitely won't be able to afford anything else.. The worst case scenario... well, is a lot worse.
If you can't afford to give money, but are able to lend me money for the next couple of months, whatever the sum, please do.

If you have a job you wish to outsource - nothing too small or tedious - please do that. What's it worth to you to save yourself a couple of hours trawling through the internet? Or trudging to a library? Or cleaning up that file? Or sorting through that humungous pile of photographs? Or...

If you're a writer in need of developmental editing, copy editing, or translation to and from German, please *do* contact me so we can work something out.

If you know someone who doesn't read this journal, but who might be able to help me out; please point them at this post.

I can also do Wordpress development (including adapting templates and basic PHP); I'm an experienced photographer with an extensive library, and I'm a very experienced developer of Filemaker databases and can provide solutions for your data organisation/presentation/crunching needs.

My Email/Paypal address is valendon@gmail.com Please feel free to contact me.

Your help would be appreciated.

Anti-heroism Defined  - Friday 4:00 - 5:15 pm   Room 629
Victoria Janssen, Rosemary/Sophy, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Lesley Hall, Chris Hill
What is an anti-hero, and what makes a character an anti-hero? How do you know an anti-hero when you see one? Can an anti-hero become a regular garden-variety hero, and if so, how? What is the appeal of an anti-hero? Are anti-heroes more realistic than heroes, and how does this impact the audience?

Spoiler Rules         Sunday 10:00 - 11:15 am          Conference 4
Jeanne Gomoll, Evelyn Browne, Christopher Davis, Chris Hill, Tara O'Shea
Guest of Honor Debbie Notkin wrote a fascinating essay, "On Spoiling the Plot." http://www.strangehorizons.com/2005/20050815/notkin-c.shtml What are your preferences for plot spoilers? Do you hate it when people give away a major plot twist? Are you equally frustrated when someone gives away even minor elements of a plot in your presence? Is there a time limit for revealing spoilers? And why do the same people who hate to have book plots spoiled for themselves eagerly view very spoiling movie previews?

What Do You Never Need to See Again?         Sun, 4:00 - 5:15 pm        Capitol B
Liz L. Gorinsky, Suzy McKee Charnas, Lesley Hall, Chris Hill, Catherine Krahe
There are scenes, events, and themes that show up frequently in science fiction and fantasy. Some have become tropes, useful for giving the reader or viewer grounding information without spending a lot of time on them. Others have become cliched and are only annoying when they pop up. What things have you seen enough to never need to see again?
